ICMP is a required element to implement Internet Protocol. ICMP is a control protocol which means that it does not carry any application data, but data about the status of the network itself. ICMP is used to report:

- Errors in the core communications of the network applications
- Availability of remote hosts
- Network traffic and congestion

Technical details:

Internet control message protocol is part of the Internet protocol suite as defined in RFC 792. ICMP messages are generated in response to errors in IP (as specified in RFC 1122) or for diagnostic or routing purposes.

ICMP

ICMP messages are generated at the IP layer. Though ICMP messages are transferred within normal IP datagrams, ICMP messages are usually processed as a special case, different from the usual IP processing. In many scenarios, it is essential to inspect the data contained in the ICMP message and output the correct error message to the application which generated the original IP packet.
Many commonly used network utilities are based on ICMP messages:

The best known example of using ICMP is the ping function, which uses ICMP to query remote hosts for response and overall server latency. The ping function is implemented using the ICMP “Echo request” and “Echo reply” commands.

ICMP also supports the traceroute command, which is used to identify intermediate “jumps” between a given client and server. The trace route command is implemented by transmitting UDP datagrams with specially set IP header fields, while looking for the total time taken for the response to reach the original transmitter.

The DLLHOST.EXE is a registry process which is run automatically by the Microsoft Windows Operating system. This process is important for managing DLL based applications. DLLHOST is by default a startup process which means that the process runs from the minute you boot up your system. This file should not be terminated by the user unless it is found to cause problems. Bad DLLHOST processes can easily be identified using one of many free registry scanners available on the internet.

DLL_HOST

DLL itself refers to the Dynamic-link library, this is a concept implemented by Microsoft in the Windows Operating system. It consists of using a shared library to run most of its applications. These libraries usually end with *.dll or *.ocx extension. The latter is for DLL library files with embedded ActiveX controls.

DLLs are in fact very similar to executable (*.EXE) files. This similarity is due to the fact that both DLLs and EXEs contain data, resources and code in variable combinations. Some common examples of DLLs include icon libraries, font files and such. Normally icon libraries have ICL extensions and font files the FOT extension.

Reality Podcasting

The development of a podcast is a very personal journey. Within the confines of a podcast you can express yourself through music, storytelling or by sharing information or drama. more and more hobbyists are exploring the world of podcasting and developing mp3 downloads for others to enjoy.software to develop an mp3 podcast is available in a variety of cost variables. It is possible to find a shareware program or you can pay hundreds of dollars for full editing software. you don’t even need a professional studio. Microphones are available that can be plugged into a USB port and are less expensive end easier to use than other alternatives.

podcasting

in traditional broadcasting a soundboard, mixer and processor were required in a sound proofed room. Home kits are available if you want to recreate a more sound proof alternative, but in many ways audio consumers seem more forgiving as to the audio quality if they feel the audio content is worth listening to.the truth is some of the more candid podcasts are finding a significant following. Perhaps the success of these podcasts is a direct reflection of Reality TV. The fame of unscripted ideas is a novel departure from more scripted shows that may sound more like traditional radio.either way there seems to be a growing fan base for podcasts. The use of Real Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds make it possible for the end user to simply subscribe and listen to the download on their terms.the RSS feed brings the podcast directly to a download site for the end user. They don’t have to go looking for it; they just have to listen in when they have time.

The marketing aspects of podcasting are tremendous and the use of RSS is a sizable benefit for both the audio consumer as well as the podcast creator. podcasts can be informative and may take weekly industry news, original content or even a phone interview and make information available to your consumers in a way that is directly aimed at a portable lifestyle. these podcasts can be downloaded and sent a portable mp3 player for listening on the go.podcasts are listened to while these audio consumers are working out in the gym, on a subway ride on the morning commute or simply on an evening walk.perhaps the best part about podcasting is that the end result doesn’t have to be perfect. You are simply providing information to consumers. You are not looking to develop something that may garner awards or be used in a national broadcast. Most podcasts are more organic than that. These podcasts are simply a heart to heart conversation with those who may be downloading. This type of podcast may be something similar to face-to-face conversations customers much like a brick and mortar storefront. The biggest difference is you only have to say what you need to say once. you may discover you have no interest in podcasting, but you may never realize the full potential of this medium if you don’t try. A small investment may be all it takes to convince you that podcasting is a good fit for your marketing objectives.

PC2PC Server Document Exchange

One often overlooked method of communicating between different departments is PC2PC through a website. A few powerful software applications enable midsized and large businesses that allow several people from different departments, or parts of the world, to work together on a single project. However, this is one powerful tool that can be revamped to allow small businesses interact between departments, and with clients to improve efficiency, profits, and customer service. many small businesses limit themselves to live customer service scripts and chat rooms on their websites, or worse, forums and blogs. This is such a limited use of the website as a communication tool. the first thing that business needs to do is rethink their ideas of the Internet as a sales tool. Instead, it can be used as a PC2PC tool, as powerful as ‘go to my PC’ and ten times as secure as any PC2PC software.

PC2PC

One often overlooked aspect is databases. It is possible to link a database to a private website. This will allow users the ability to work on the same project – without risking the integrity of the company’s security system. A web based database can allow users to FTP upload unlimited files onto the web server, and then allow another person to download the file to a PC half way around the world. This keeps the customer, or hacker, out of the company’s network. However, this only works if the web based system is completely independent of the company’s network.there are several IM programs that can be used by small companies. I prefer www.V3chat.com. This company has several secure software packages that can be revamped to meet anyone’s system including IM and chat software. The benefit of this company’s software is that it works ‘stand alone’ or in combination with a forum, blog, content management system. Several companies with large transfers of paper are starting to use content management systems. While I do not suggest trusting a free software package like mambo, I do feel that some of the free content management systems can be revamped to serve smaller businesses well. Even something like mambo, combined with V3chat’s IM program, can turn a website into a powerful ‘meeting’ and document exchange tool. the most important thing is to hire a professional to do this. There are freelance web programmers who are familiar with these systems and can make a mini-version of a system that a large business would pay $50 000 to $1m for. The short sighted look is to believe that if you do not buy the complete professional package, than the power of the Internet is beyond your company’s reach.
In today’s world progress and profit is all about communication. A powerful content management system, database program, and IM, combined with a VoIP system that will allow you customer to step into the project and actually see every part, individually or as a whole – is far more powerful and cost effective than flying ten people to a single office and trying to cram everything into a single presentation. When it comes to today’s technology, don’t think big – think smart.

CRM Technology

CRM technology is a fantastic set of tools to help make sales and marketing efforts more efficient, faster flowing, and more accurate. At the same time, they help you automate your database management so that you don’t have to spend so much of your precious work time keeping up with records and files. However, CRM is about the relationships between people—namely, your prospects and clients. Companies are a grand illusion, in a certain sense. People do business, companies do not. There were businesses before computers (though some of you out there might find that hard to believe) and there were thus relationships before computers. CRM is not something that got invented after computers. Only the moniker “CRM” was invented them.

crm

The key practices of client relationships did not go out the window with the invention of the computer, either. Only the toolbox for helping you do it right has changed. CRM technology is your new toolbox. We have to use the practices that work for relating to people and getting them to buy and come back for more. We can take advantage of all that CRM technology software provides us to help make our practice perfect (or a reasonable facsimile of perfection).
For instance, a prospect or client has a different experience with you when she goes to your website and is greeted by a human voice or can have a chat with you via her keyboard, which is what some CRM technology companies make possible, than she does with the usual Net browsing. This technology allows you to track the the prospect or client’s navigation through your website, and be able to chime in and offer him your professional help. However, it is debatable as to how welcoming this feels to visitors. If you were in a face-to-face or retail setting, you would observe the visitor and then decide based on what you saw whether or not to approach her or what to say to her.

crm2

You can’t see her face on the Net, however (unless for some strange reason you’re both on webcams), and when the day comes when that is possible (without needing any webcams) it is dubious whether she’d let you. Businesses nowadays tend more and more to want to give themselves a CRM solution or take their CRM to another level with software. Fortunes fall upon us fast in the 21st century business world, and CRM technology moves your sales and marketing along at a fast clip, indeed. However, your CRM needs to be in place and working well before you take it to the IT level. In short, you still need to know what you’re doing with sales and marketing if you want to be a success in business. Then you’ll know how to use your CRM software the right way.

VPS Web Hosting

Shared hosting allows thousands of people to host their own sites at a very reasonable cost. It has some drawbacks, however. Since hundreds of sites can be hosted on a single server resources such as CPU, disk space, and bandwidth have to be shared with your virtual neighbours.

Shared resources are usually not a problem for small to medium sized sites. Your main limitation is the lack of control over system level software – http servers, mail servers etc. You don’t have any choice of operating system and you cannot compile programs or do administrative tasks such as setting up Spam filters or firewalls.

vps_hosting

Many people would say ‘So what? I don’t want to do that stuff anyway!’ It’s true that the majority of website owners have no interest or ability to handle this kind of work and are happy to leave it to the hosting company. Those who desire more control over their server environment or wish to experiment with new software, however, can get access to this level of management with a Virtual Private Server.

A virtual private server (VPS) is a physical server that has been divided (using software) into several virtual machines, each acting as an independent dedicated server. The physical resources such as RAM, CPU and disk space are still shared, but each VPS acts independently of the others. Each VPS can have a different operating system and can be configured in any way possible.

The key advantage of VPS is allowing each VPS administrator access to the root level of his virtual server. This kind of access allows the administrator to install and delete software, set permissions, create accounts – in short, do everything that the administrator of a ‘real’ sever can.

VPS2

As well as providing more control over your hosting environment, a VPS is more secure than shared hosting. Websites on a shared server all have the same operating system, so if a hacker were to find access to the root of the server he could damage any or all of the websites on that server. A VPS, on the other hand, is divided in such a way that even if a hacker were to gain entry through one account, there is no way to access the others. Each VPS is invisible to the others and there is no way to set up root level access from one VPS to another.

Virtual Private Servers can be set up in various ways so be sure to understand how the hosting company has allocated resources. The most common configuration is to divide all the physical resources evenly by the number of accounts. Thus, if there are 10 virtual servers, each would receive 10% of the total bandwidth, CPU, memory and disk space.

The disadvantages of VPS are almost the same as the advantages. The control that a VPS account provides can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. You have the ability to delete files, set permissions improperly, allow virus-laden software on the system and, in general, really screw things up. If you don’t have the knowledge to administer a server, or are not willing to learn, VPS is not for you.

If your website has outgrown shared hosting, however, VPS offers an affordable alternative to dedicated hosting. When shopping for a VPS host, be sure to find out how system resources are divided up, the number of VPS accounts on each physical server, the method for upgrading, and the choices of operating systems.

Web Hosting, PHP vs ASP

Web pages used to be simple affairs, where everything you needed to do could be done in HTML, there was really one set of rules and one set of expectations. Today’s world is far more complex.
Web pages can be more complex and customers expect more from web pages. Terms like PHP and ASP now compete with HTML when starting a web page and it can be hard to figure out what option best suits your needs. If you’ve ever driven an import car, you can appreciate the importance of being able to find support that meet your needs, if you’re going to kick the tires with your website and turn it into something exception, having a large community that can support you is critical.

php_asp

PHP, Personal Home Pages has more support on the internet than ASP - Active Server Pages. The larger user base gives you more allies; more people who can help you develop your own talents and your website. Another advantage of PHP is that it’s based on unix, giving it more cross platform capability than ASP as increasing demands of Microsoft’s operating systems level the cost playing field between Microsoft products and Apple, this is ever more important. And did we mention that in the grand tradition of unix, PHP is free, while ASP needs support software that isn’t? For add-ons and additional tools, PHP’s open source has a strong base of free tools, whereas ASP demands that you purchase these tools. You can find help for your PHP programming from free to paid. Most professional ASP support is very expensive by comparison. Also, you have to consider the costs associated with a web hosting on Windows Server compared to Linux Servers. For most cases, you will notice a substantial difference in prices. Not only that, but Windows severs do tend to be unstable and prone to failures, are more likely to be attacked by viruses, Trojans and exploits. Linux servers on the other hand are much more stable and the attacks windows servers suffer in a daily basis are non-existent in Linux.

If you are considering either a dedicated server or a shared hosting, your fist choice should be Linux. I’ve yet to find a problem that can’t be solved using PHP and Linux. With all this, you might wonder why ASP still is out there at all. Part of it stems from ASP being based on the same methodology that’s used to make macros in other Microsoft products. People that have invested the time learning how to use macros in Word or Excel will be more comfortable using ASP. PHP is based on C++, a robust computer programming language. Before this intimidates you, the free tools that exist out there allow for a lot of this to be hidden, until you’re ready to take advantage of the power behind PHP. Putting it all together, the power, the cost, flexibility, stability and support of PHP is far superior to that of ASP. If you’re going to commit to building the best web page you can, commit to using the best tools you can. Investing in learning PHP will pay off when you’re able to pop the hood, invite your friends over and transform your web page from a normal, average, page to a sophisticated and highly toned performance page.
